Fabio Capello remains lost in translation

Fabio Capello's battle with the English language continues. And as anyone who heard his speech at the PFA awards on Sunday will attest, it is not a scrap he is in danger of winning in the near future.

As he struggles with his conjunctions, Capello might be advised to follow the recruitment policy of fellow countryman Roberto Donadoni. Italy's national coach was at Birkbeck College, in the University of London, on Monday, answering students' questions about club-v-country tensions.
Donadoni equipped himself with an interpreter who not only appeared to know nothing about football, but was also pretty sketchy on the nuances of English. And Italian for that matter. The assembled academics found themselves scratching their heads at Donadoni's apparent genius at answering a different question from the one he had been asked.
The highlight came when a student wondered if he might comment on the paradox of three English Champions League semi-finalists yet England failing to qualify for Euro 2008. The answer lay in statistics, suggested Donadoni through his interpreter.
"Seventy per cent of the Italian team are Italians," the man continued, "whereas only 38 per cent of the England team are English."
According to those in attendance who speak Italian, Donadoni was in fact talking about the make-up of the respective leagues.
But as an idea, Capello would have to agree, it has legs: whenever anything gets tricky, employ someone to lose it all in translation.
