Government-speak gets lost in translation

Thursday, 17/04/2008
Interpreters from across the Kimberley are meeting this week to translate jargon from government agencies into various Indigenous languages.
Members at the workshops say certain terms are being lost in translation, which can jeopardise the success of land management projects in the region.
Interpreter Annette Kogolo says some of the translating has been difficult.
"Because a lot of words that are in English we don't have in our own language, so we have to describe so people can understand," she said.

"Like for the term natural resources, that's actually about soil, water, plants and rocks and that actually is put into our own language and the people understand exactly what natural resources is."
